Blog Moved To New Site

Effective March 3, 2010: The BackpackBaseCamp Blog is now at: http://backpackbasecamp.blogspot.com/

You may or may not have noticed, this week we have been having performance/response time issues with the BackpackBaseCamp.com blog. This was (is) a technical issue with the host server which intermittently caused the blog to ‘hang’ so that the screens would not come up on a web browser. Not a good thing. The host server provider (GoDaddy.com) has been unable to resolve this issue (no comment on the ‘service’ from that provider). Therefore, it was necessary that I move the Blog to another host provider. The Blog is now at http://backpackbasecamp.blogspot.com/ .

The main web site BackpackBaseCamp.com Continues to remain at the same URL on the same server. The technical issues were not effecting the main site, only the blog.

Most readers subscripted through a ‘RSS’ subscription have been automatically re-directed to the new site. I will shortly put a post on the new site titled “Welcome to the new BackpackBaseCamp Blog” – if you receive this post – your subscription is still in place, if you do not receive this post you need to re-subscribe at http://backpackbasecamp.blogspot.com/. Depending on which RSS ‘reader’ you use, you may have been resent many of our old posts.

Sorry about this inconvenience, some technical issues are beyond my control.

Lightweight Tents

These are the four best ultralight tents:

Tarptent Sublite Sil TarpTent makes a few different models (the Contrail is also a good alternate one person tent); Sublite is 21.5 oz., 42" peak, has a mesh vent and is supported with two hiking poles. About $200.
Gossamer The One This is the lightest tent available made of 'Spinnaker' cloth about 17 oz. A 47 inch peak. Supported by two hiking poles. Large vestibule, internal space is a bit small (17.5 sq ft). Harder to setup than the Lunar Solo, but not difficult. About $300.
Lunar Solo Six Moon Designs; This is the tent I use and I highly recommend it. 23 oz. Supported by one hiking pole. 45 inch peak. Fast and easy to setup. It has a nice size vestibule area and plenty of room inside for one person plus backpack. About $230.
Antigravity Gear TarpTent This 10 foot tarp tent is a nice simple design (i.e. no zippers to break); 23 ounes (20 oz sans the vestibule). Supported by one hiking pole. 44 inch peak. Very nice ultralight tent. About $230.

You notice one of the ways weight has been cut on these tents is that your hiking pole(s) serve as the tent poles. This works very nicely and has the added benefit of making more room in you pack. If you don't want to go as far a using a tarp, I for one don't especially in buggy areas, an ultralight tent is the way to go.
